About Derek

Derek Sandhaus is a spirits educator and author, most recently of Drunk in China and Baijiu: The Essential Guide to Chinese Spirits. His writing on food and drink have appeared in numerous publications, including PunchSaveur, and Foreign Policy. While residing in China, he traveled extensively to the country’s alcohol production centers, learning from the people who make, sell, and consume traditional spirits. In 2018, he co-founded Ming River Sichuan Baijiu, serving as the brand's marketing director. He now advises the baijiu industry on internationalization strategies. Derek lives with his wife and dog in Athens, Greece.

PRAISE For Drunk in China

I have learned so much from Derek Sandhaus over the years, and Drunk in China is no exception. It’s not just about baijiu—although it offers a master class on the subject. It’s about China and its history, culture, and relationship with the West, told through the perspective of a witty, generous storyteller.
